Joan Carey

It is with great sadness that Gabrielle announces the news of the death of her much-loved mother, Joan Carey, on April 15, 2009. Joan was the subject of Gabrielle's most recent book Waiting Room.

Joan's funeral was held on April 21 in Newtown. The service was conducted by Dr Keith Suter, broadcaster and religious writer. Keith knew Joan through her work as a peace activist.

Lee Rhiannon, Greens Member of the Legislative Council in the NSW Parliament, also spoke at Joan's funeral.

Joan was buried at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland.

In memory of her mother, Gabrielle is in the process of establishing the Joan Carey Peace Award. Joan was a long-time member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and it is hoped that WILPF will auspice the award.

Waiting Room wins praise in the May edition of Australian Literary Review:

Carey's ruthless self-scrutiny energises this memoir … amid loss, Carey wants to make sense of things by making a story or, perhaps, by discovering a thread of a story that she can wind back to some absent core of her mother … Carey's spare prose suggests the courage of her venture. The unevasive clarity of her descriptions of guilt and a sense of daughterly inadequacy give this work intensity and clarity. Felicity Plunkett
